2020 - 2023 BERLIN AND SOMESET
Perceptions began during lock down; my work became distorted and fractured which I felt reflected the times. Navigating this new landscape which offered many perspectives, narratives and bubbles that momentarily turned the world on its head.
I intuitively began painting a series of distorted self-portraits, which ran parallel with some major self-reflection. I decided to take this project to Berlin, somewhere I had previously lived, wanting to meet an old part of myself and see what the passing of time mirrored back. I began my artist residency journey at Berlins ‘Takt’ back in 2015, and I was now returning in 2021 to begin one at GlogauAir.
My aim was to create a dimension of space in which I became the observer observing the observer; using lenses mirrors, water and kaleidoscopes to create an element of distortion. The process was intuitive and instinctual, where parts of my subconscious were brought to the surface through the medium of paint to be healed, transformed and released. Each singular self-portrait becomes its own thumb print, the many smaller parts of the self that make up the whole.
Perceptions became a series of distorted self-portraits, centring around self-reflection; here I collect faces and spaces in flux which transform along the journey.
